British Characters in Anime & Manga

After watching Kiniro Mosaic, and thoroughly enjoying every moment of it, I decided I would take a look at characters who hail from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, just because I can. Take a look at this list, and then consider if all anime happened to come true through some ridiculous event; the UK would probably do quite well in protecting itself. Also, I will only be looking at characters from the anime I've watched and the manga I have read.

There is no proper order to this list, though I guess I will be going through the characters who are half-British first.

Mari Illustrious Makinami
Maki Illustrious Makinami is from the Rebuild of Evangelion films. She debuted in Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance. She is the Fourth Child, and the only one who enjoys piloting an Eva Unit. She loves the smell of LCL, and is extremely adept at piloting Eva Units. She is able to pilot Evangelion Unit-02 and activate its Beast Mode. When it comes to combat, Mari is extremely vicious, and has quite the foul mouth.
Mari's names come from two World War II warships: the Japanese destroyer Makinami and the British aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious. It's possible that the two names are used to represent a mixed heritage.

L
L from Death Note is the world's top detective. He is also the world's number two and three detectives. He has quite a mixed heritage; he is one quarter Japanese, one quarter English, one quarter Russian and one quarter of either French or Italian. He grew up in Britain, though.
If you don't already know, L is a genius. Light Yagami proves to be a worthy rival, though it is evident that L has Light figured out right away. I have to say, the way the live-action films ended were slightly more satisfying than the anime, but I won't say anything else to spoil it for those who haven't seen them.

Yomiko Readman
Yomiko Readman from Read or Die, also known as "The Paper". Much like Mari up there, she is half-Japanese and half-British. She worked for the British Library, though certain events transpired between the Read or Die OVA and TV series that changed things somewhat. She has the ability to manipulate paper.
Yomiko is generally shy, and absolutely loves her books. Given the choice, she will choose books over people. However, she is kind and polite, and doesn't think of her enemies as bad people.

Negi Springfield
Negi Springfield is the main protagonist of Ken Akamatsu's Negima! Magister Negi Magi manga. At the start of the series, he's simply a 10 year old prodigy from Wales. He moves to Japan in order to teach English at an all girls' school. However, Negi is capable of performing magic, which leads to many awkward situations with his students. As the series went on, Negi's origin became slightly more complicated, though he had spent the majority of his life in Wales, so I think he qualifies for this list.
He isn't really confident in his abilities, and his students, friends and mentors often have to provide him with inspirational speeches. However, when he does get his act together, he is capable of pulling off fairly amazing stunts.

Evangeline Athanasia Katherine McDowell
Evangeline A.K. McDowell is also from Ken Akamatsu's Negima! Magister Negi Magi manga. Despite her appearance, she is really a vampire that has existed for multiple centuries. She was turned during the Hundred Years War, apparently. She serves as Negi's first main antagonist, though it isn't until later on in the series that she gets to display her full power.
Judging by her surname, she is from either England or Scotland. She woke up on her 10th birthday to discover that she had been turned into a "True Blood Vampire" through sorcery.
Evangeline uses powerful ice magic. Also, as a vampire, she doesn't possess any of the weaknesses you would usually expect. She could arguably be called the second most powerful character in the entire Negima! Magister Negi Magi manga.

Karen Kujou
Karen Kujou from Kiniro Mosaic is half-Japanese and half-British. She is carefree, happy-go-lucky, joyful and she always does what she can to bring a smile to those people around her. As a result of her mixed heritage, she speaks in both broken Japanese and "Engrish". Her unique way of saying "good morning" in Japanese spread throughout her class.

Alice Cartalet
Alice Cartalet is also from Kiniro Mosaic. She is from England, so unlike Karen, she is wholly English. After Shinobu Oomiya done a homestay at her home when they were younger, Alice ends up moving to Japan to be with Shinobu. At first, Alice is shy, but she manages to open up with Shino, and make more friends at her Japanese school.
As you would expect from an English girl, she is fluent in her home language, though she quickly picks up Japanese in order to communicate with Shino better. However, she does get jealous whenever Shino shows affection for someone else, or someone else shows affection towards Shino. Her appearance is commented on several times throughout Kiniro Mosaic, as it's rare seeing a girl with blonde hair in a Japanese school, and the one she goes to has two of them. Due to her hair, the people of Japan are easily able to identify her as a foreigner, though no harm comes of it.

Index Librorum Prohibitorum
Index Librorum Prohibitorum is the eponymous character of A Certain Magical Index. She is the main female character, and the main heroine of the Magic Side. As you may have guessed, Index is able to use magic. She also has 103,000 grimoires within herself, making her a target for those who want to possess powerful magic. She ends up in Academy City, which is located in Japan, but she has a British Passport, hence her inclusion in this list.
Index finds intrigue in things that an adult would find mundane, and she is both ignorant and curious of modern technology. Index has a kind nature, such as when she found a stray cat and decided to adopt it.

Excalibur
Fool!
Excalibur is the strongest weapon within Soul Eater, and he is able to be wielded by anyone. However, there is a slight catch; a list of one thousand provisions that the would be wielder has to fulfil. Taking both the manga and anime into account, only two meisters had ever successfully wielded the Holy Sword; King Arthur, and a Death Weapon Meister Academy student named Hiro. However, the latter couldn't deal with the way Excalibur sneezed, and gave up on wielding him.
Excalibur is one of the eight Great Old Ones, and a former acquaintance of Death himself.

Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing
Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing is the leader of the Hellsing Organisation in the Hellsing anime and manga series. She (yeah, a female with a "sir" title) has a very collected attitude, never allowing her emotions to stand in the way. Integra is patriotic, and values her duties to protect the United Kingdom, its Queen, and the Anglican Church above everything else.
Integra is an expert fencer, and extremely accurate with a gun. She is also intelligent, oh, and just happens to be the master of the most powerful vampire, Alucard.

Britain
Britain, or Arthur Kirkland, is the representation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Hetalia. In the anime, he is basically a collection of all the stereotypes one would have of a typical British person.
He used to be a pirate. He is described as fanciful, blunt and obstinate. He is cynical, sharp-tongued and prone to rough language. He has poor cooking skills (which is a dig at British food). Britain also believes in mythical creatures, and is able to communicate with supernatural beings, even those not from his homeland.

Lynette Bishop
Lynette Bishop is a witch of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, or the Strike Witches. She originates from Britannia, which is basically Strike Witches' version of Great Britain.
She serves as the Strike Witches' sniper, possessing the ability to control the flight of projectiles to a limited extent. She can also charge magical energy into her shots to increase their effectiveness.
Lynette is quiet, and keeps to herself. However, after Yoshika Miyafuji joins the Strike Witches, she opens up to her and becomes more confident in her abilities to shoot down Neuroi.

Darjeeling
Darjeeling is a character from Girls und Panzer. She is the commander of the St. Gloriana Sensha-dou team, and operates a British Churchill tank. It isn't outright said that she is actually of British descent, but I figure the fact that she operates a British tank and she is often seen drinking tea qualifies her for it.
She has a calm and chivalrous personality, and her motto is "no matter how fast we go, or no matter how many hits we take, I will never spill my tea."
Her team mates would also qualify for this list; their names are Assam and Orange Pekoe.

Saber
Saber is from the Fate universe. She is one of the servants that the mages can summon the Holy Grail War. Her true identity is Arturia Pendragon; she is the once and future king of Britain, who you would probably know better as Arthur.
She wields an invisible sword when she wants to hide her true identity. However, if necessary, she does use Excalibur (not that one up there, by the way), and can pull of an anti-fortress attack with it. In both Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night, she becomes the servant of an Emiya; Kiritsugu in Fate/Zero and Shirou in Fate/Stay Night. Rin Tohsahka considers her the most powerful servant, though her attempt to summon her fails.
Saber is more than capable of holding her own in a fight, and was even able to go against Berserker's strength. The scabbard for Excalibur, Avalon, grants its carrier immortality, though she doesn't possess it when Shirou accidentally summons her.

So, British characters from the various anime and manga I have seen and read. Everything from normal schoolgirls to living weapons and legendary heroes are included in this list. Of course, this doesn't take into account the characters with which I am unfamiliar. However, those characters I am familiar with are pretty damn awesome.
