The Mythology Behind Coin Flip Chronicles

I thought I'd go over some of the myths and legends from the world of Coin Flip Chronicles. So, yeah, let's get down to it.

One of the most common legends referred to throughout the series is the Witch Queen. She was a powerful woman who had flawless control of magic. Also, the magic changed her hair colour to purple, which was passed down through her family.
The Witch Queen performed many feats during her time; the first of which was gaining the trust of the divided kingdoms of the land. The kingdoms had constantly been at war with each other, always seeming to find the smallest excuse to invade each other. Of course, many people had grown tired of the constant fighting, but they didn't have the power to overthrow those who forced the fighting.
At this point, the Witch Queen did not have such a title, and magic was a little more believable during that time. Still, she had often found herself outcast due to her hair colour, a problem that continued down the generations.

Regardless, the young Witch Queen did not allow that to get to her. Instead, she earned the love of the people by fighting against those who were oppressing them. Due to her powerful magic, she was able to bring a temporary peace to the land whilst she lived. She also rose to the position of queen, hence the title she gained.

Another legend that will be mentioned throughout the series is that of the Demon Slayer. This one revolves around the katana Rin carries. It is said that a demon once invaded the land, and was slaughtering the populace. Hero after hero attempted to slay the monster, but they all met their ends at its hand.
One man, however, caught wind of this demon. Instead of rushing out to try and claim glory, he researched ancient texts that concerned similar beings. He could not find a surefire way to kill the demon, but he did discover a method that could be able to seal it.

Working quickly, but carefully, the man forged a katana; the only one of its kind in all the world. He followed the forging techniques from the ancient texts as best he could, but just produced an ordinary blade. Admittedly, it was an absurdly sharp ordinary blade, but it didn't seem to have any demon slaying properties.

With the people becoming even more fearful of the demon, the man set out and confronted it. The creature had monstrous strength, but the man was able to keep up with it. Eventually, he was able to strike a mortal blow. To the people, it had seemed that the man had slain the demon.

The man died a few years later, without a family. His sword was enshrined in a temple to be kept under a close watch; those were his last words. However, the sword become an object of desire, and it was lost when thieves ransacked the temple.

It turned up many decades later, where it found its way into the hands of Rin's father. He could feel the darkness within the katana, but was confident that he could control it. However, he never truly got to test it out before being slain by a mysterious silhouette; he was only able to pass it down to Rin.

As with many myths and legends, there are a great many tales concerning the Witch Queen and the Demon Slayer. However, those are not the only fables from the world of Coin Flip Chronicles, and I may get around to writing them all one day.
First, however, I will be focusing on Rin's journey.

Coin Flip

Ah, no, this isn't a reference to my series of writing that revolves around Rin and her adventures. Rather, this is the decision made about which game I should claim for free. The winner is...

Luigi's Mansion 2!

Besides, Animal Crossing: New Leaf is something that I would play a lot at first, but then I would just allow it to gather virtual dust, sitting unused on my 3DS' memory. Then again, the same could be said about any game I download... but there are consequences for leaving Animal Crossing alone for a long time.

So, I'm gonna get my code, and then claim my free game. I might make a post about it.
Also, I'm toying with the idea of writing reviews...

Just some Wii U stuff

Wii U's Virtual Console will be made available tomorrow (27/4/2013), the day after the update to decrease loading times (well, for Europe, anyway. As far as I know, both Japan and the US already have this).

The launch line up for the EU Virtual Console looks something like this:
  • Super Mario World
  • Excitebike
  • Mario's Super Picross
  • F-Zero
  • Ice Climber
  • Donkey Kong Jr.
  • Punch-Out!!
I already have Mario's Super Picross, and I'm not sure whether I'll pay the extra bit for the added Miiverse functionality. However, I have yet to download Super Mario World, so that may just happen.

With the news of Earthbound getting a worldwide Virtual Console release, I'm hoping we'll see some of the older Fire Emblem games that were available on the NES and SNES and never made it outside of Japan.

I have an SD card with more memory... but still have a dilemma

Continuing to talk about the So Many Games! promotion, I now have enough memory on my 3DS to download that free game.
There are three games that particularly appeal to me, as I may have already said. These are Luigi's Mansion 2, Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D.

Maybe going over them here will help me to choose, who knows?

So, first up is Luigi's Mansion 2. The sequel to the GameCube's Luigi's Mansion (duh), it features more mansions, and is longer. I've heard that this focuses on puzzles more than vacuuming up ghosts, giving it a Zelda feel. This really tempts me, since The Legend of Zelda is one of my favourite game series. There's also local and online multiplayer, which helps to add to the replay value.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf is next up. There isn't really a point to Animal Crossing; you start a new life and move to a town populated by anthropomorphic animals. In this one, however, you end up as mayor of the town. So in addition to gathering bells (the game's currency) to pay off your loan to a raccoon name Tom Nook, you can make changes and additions to your town. There's all the usual stuff you would expect of an Animal Crossing game as well; fishing, fossils, bugs, etc.

Finally, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is a remake of the Wii version of the game. I already own the Wii version, but this remake features some additions. First, there's a mode that makes the game easier; something I will ignore if I do get this game. There's a new world, which also means new levels. Also, the game will make use of the stereoscopic 3D with the levels that require Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong to venture into the background.

...that didn't help at all.

However, I do know that Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is my lowest priority. With a choice between two games, maybe I should flip a coin...

Nintendo really do spoil us

After the excellent Nintendo Direct showcasing a bunch of upcoming 3DS games, Nintendo have revealed a neat little offer. The promotion is called 'So Many Games!'.

Basically, if you have registered three of the Nintendo 3DS games in the promotion, you can get download a fourth for free. The eight games are Luigi's Mansion 2, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins, and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity.

Half of the titles aren't available in Europe as I write this (and I don't know if this promotion applies to all territories), but they will send a code for the free game to your e-mail address shortly after it has been released. Also, the promotion runs until June 30, so by the time it ends, all the available games will have been released.

Now, I own Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and Fire Emblem: Awakening, and I registered them. Therefore I am eligible for the promotion. The trouble is that I don't know which game I should get for free, or whether there is enough memory left on my SD card. I could just buy a bigger one, but then I'd need an SD card reader to copy my files over. Still... I think I might just do that.

Anyway, as for what I will choose. At the moment, I'm considering Luigi's Mansion 2, Animal Crossing: New Leaf or Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. I've played the original Luigi's Mansion on the GameCube, and I enjoyed it. Animal Crossing is a game that having ready to play there on the system would be extremely convenient. I own the original Donkey Kong Country Returns on the Wii, but I haven't completed it.
Still, I should probably consider getting a bigger SD card first.

Choices, choices...

A New Entry in Coin Flip Chronicles Appeared!

With a little inspiration from Fire Emblem: Awakening, I have developed a new plot for Coin Flip Chronicles. Of course, whether this will become a published work or not... well, who can say. For now, though here's the basic idea of the plot.

As Rin and Amity continue their adventures, they come upon a strange gate. During their stay at night, it emits a bizarre light, leading the pair to go and investigate. Before they set off, bandits who may have arrived from the gate attack the town.
The bandits are defeated, allowing the pair to finally go to the gate and investigate. When they get there, the light appears again. This time, they find a young girl who looks bizarrely like Rin. The girl then claims to be Rin's daughter; an impossibility, considering the relationship she shares with Amity.

Rin quickly learns that the child is being hunted by those from the other side of the gate, who invade her own world. With the enemies claiming that Rin is the Witch Queen and calling for her death and the fate of the young girl's life hanging in the balance, Rin and Amity will be faced with new troubles.

Fire Emblem: Awakening is Ace!

Well, I've been somewhat distracted lately. I'm pretty sure you can guess by what from the title. Still, I'll clarify it here; the Nintendo 3DS game Fire Emblem: Awakening is possibly the best Fire Emblem game yet.
Admittedly I haven't finished it quite yet, but I've loved every last minute of it I have played.

I'm also glad to see that after their absence in Radiant Dawn and Shadow Dragon, the support conversations have returned. Just another little feature to help get you further attached to the characters you're commanding. Of course, if you can get the support level between a male and female unit high enough, they'll get married and have children who will join your cause.

So naturally, I (that is Rory, the avatar I created for me in the game), married Nowi, a manakete. What's a manakete, I hear nobody ask. Well, a manakete is someone who uses the power of Dragonstones to transform into a dragon. Anyway, thanks to some higher power, I was also able to recruit my daughters; Morgan and Nah.
Morgan looks practically identical to Nowi, only with shorter hair. She aspires to become a great tactician like her father. Nah, however, inherited my hair colour. She takes everything seriously, which is something that she finds troubling about her mother.
Anyway, with Nowi, Morgan, Nah and I one the field, no enemy should ever consider laying a finger upon my happy little family.

Yeah, so Fire Emblem: Awakening is damn good. If you have a 3DS, get it. If you don't have a 3DS, get one and this game. Then afterwards, go and experience all the other Fire Emblem games.

Fire Emblem Week: It's here!

Whilst I wait for my 3DS to recharge, I thought I would post the news here that Fire Emblem: Awakening found its way through my letterbox this morning. It came with the limited edition artbook, and I love what I have played of it so far.
As I play through the game, I will be posting my thoughts and reactions if and when I feel like it.

Fire Emblem Week: Micaiah

Continuing Fire Emblem week, I will now be taking a look at the Silver-Haired Maiden, Micaiah.
Micaiah, and Yune
Micaiah was first introduced in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, as the leader of the Dawn Brigade. She wields light magic.
After the Mad King's War three years ago, Micaiah's homeland of Daien had been placed under the rule of Begnion. However, the Begnion soldiers abuse their power, which is why Micaiah is leading a band of freedom fighters called the Dawn Brigade.
Micaiah has a strong bond with Sothe; a thief who get ended up working under Ike during the Mad King's War. Sothe is never far from Micaiah's side.
As far as main characters go, Micaiah could be considered to be the worst. Don't get me wrong; she's a solid enough unit. However, as she is a mage, she has next to no defence and falls easily to physical attacks. This is a problem when she has to survive if you don't want to see the game over screen.
Micaiah loves her home of Daien, and will fight for it, even if that isn't the right path. During the events of Radiant Dawn, she comes to realise that her actions aren't the best. Still, she goes ahead with them, due to unforeseen forces manipulating her.

Nintendo... just shut up and take my money already!

As you may have guessed from the title of this post, I am somewhat ecstatic about the contents of today's EU Nintendo Direct. I can barely contain my excitement, but I will try to keep things calm.

We were treated to an introduction by Satoru Iwata, Mario and Luigi. As 2013 is the Year of Luigi, Satoru Iwata gave us some more details on upcoming games that featured the green plumber.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros.
The next in the Mario & Luigi series, which sees Mario travelling into Luigi's dreams after Princess Peach is kidnapped (didn't see that one coming ¬_¬). The game features the Bros. attacks that have been seen in the previous games, but Mario can also enlist the help of hundreds of Luigis in the dream world.
I played the first Mario & Luigi game and loved it, but I got a little lax about the DS ones. However, I do have access to those, as my mum owns them. Still, this one looks good and I am mighty tempted by it.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros. is due for release on the 3DS on July 12th.

Mario Golf: World Tour
To me, this is just a game that is stopping Camelot from developing Golden Sun 4. However, I know that it will turn out to be a decent game, because Camelot are developing it. I wouldn't rush out to go buy it personally, but it sounds like it will be worth buying if you're into golf games.
It features local and online multiplayer, communities like Mario Kart 7 and custom rules. So, if you want a tournament where you can only play as Luigi, you can set one up, as suggested by Mr. Iwata.
Mario Golf: World Tour is due for release some time in the summer.

Mario Party
A new entry for the Mario Party series, this will be a 3DS game. It will feature several different boards, all with their own rules to play by. Since this is due for release in the winter, I imagine that more details will be revealed in the near future.
As I have said, Mario Party is due for release on the 3DS this winter.

New Super Luigi U
As you could guess from the title, this will be a title for the Wii U... or rather, add-on software for a pre-existing Wii U title. New Super Luigi U will change all the levels in New Super Mario Bros. U, and Luigi will be the only playable character. Luigi jumps higher than Mario, but has less traction.
New Super Luigi U will be available for download this summer.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
Next up is a remake of a Wii game. If you experienced the Wii game, this will be more of the same thing (I'd recommend it). However, the game has a coward- I mean 'New Mode', that increases the number of hits Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong can take, and several items that offer aid for newcomers to the series.
I may pick this one up, but I will only play in Original Mode.
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is due out on the 3DS on May 24th.

Yoshi's Island 3DS
Nintendo have announced a new game in the Yoshi's Island series, following on from Yoshi's Island DS. We were given very little information. All the usual gameplay one would expect of Yoshi's Island was shown, but there was also the addition of a gigantic egg that destroyed the stage after it was thrown.
More details on this new Yoshi's Island game will be revealed in the future.

Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move
A new addition to the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series, this title will be a downloadable game from the 3DS eShop. It appears that you have to guide clockwork Marios and other characters through various stages by placing tiles with pathways upon them. There are also four minigames, and there is the ability to create custom levels and upload them to the internet. Naturally, you will also be able to download other people's creations.
Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move will be available from the 3DS eShop on May 9th.

Wii U Spring Update
Next up was an announcement that the Wii U will receive an update next week that speeds up loading times, as well as allowing it to install downloaded software automatically and perform background downloads. This is all good news, especially as I have been playing a lot of Monster Hunter on my Wii U lately.

Wii U Virtual Console
The day after the update, Virtual Console will be available on the Wii U. This allows people to download games from previous Nintendo consoles, for a price of course. The launch line-up hasn't been officially confirmed, although Nintendo did show a few titles that would be available. I caught glimpses of Super Mario World and Mario's Super Picross amongst others.

Pikmin 3
Continuing the Wii U news, the existence of the Winged Pikmin was confirmed. It had been seen in last year's E3 trailer, but not until now was it officially named. We were shown the box art; the Winged Pikmin features on it. Other the next few months, we will receive gradual details about this game.

EarthBound
A mere nine years after EarthBound was released in Japan, it will finally hit the shores of Europe. It will be available on the Wii U Virtual Console, before the end of this year.

Fire Emblem: Awakening
As the release date for my next favourite game draws near, the prices for the downloadable content were revealed. A single map will cost £1.79, with three available to begin with. However, there are map packs, which will cost £4.49; cheaper than buying all three separately. For the first month after release, the first DLC map will be free, whilst the map pack will be available at the reduced price of £2.99.
I will be downloading these maps; after all, it's more Fire Emblem, and I love me some Fire Emblem.

LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins
The prequel to the Wii U's recently released LEGO City Undercover, this will be a 3DS title. The trailer made me chuckle a couple of times, and if the reviews for LEGO City Undercover are to be believed, this could turn out to be a great game. With the London MCM Comic Con looming, however, I am holding off on purchasing games recklessly, so I won't be getting hold of this straight away.
LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins will be released for the Nintendo 3DS on April 26th.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Animal Crossing will be doing a lot of social networking, with official Facebook and Twitter profiles. The official website has also been launched.
As for the game itself, a new feature was shown off; the ability to dream about other's towns and enter them. You can then copy any designs you like and take them back to your own town.
I can't be entirely sure whether I'll get this or not; it's a very laidback game and it will depend upon my mood at the time of release.
Animal Crossing: New Leaf will be released for the Nintendo 3DS on 14th June. There will also be a limited edition Animal Crossing 3DS XL, with the game preinstalled, released the same day.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity
The next in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, this game sees you take on the role of a Pokémon and explore mysterious dungeons. If I remember correctly, you can generate dungeons using the 3DS' AR capabilities.
I've not really played the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games, so this isn't exactly a high priority for me.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity will be released for the 3DS on May 17th.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
These two Zelda titles were Game Boy Color games that were released side by side. However, unlike certain other games that had two released at the same time (I'm looking at you, Pokémon), both were unique. Oracle of Ages had you travelling through time with the Harp of Ages, whilst Oracle of Seasons had you manipulating the seasons with the Rod of Seasons.
Oracle of Ages was my first handheld Zelda experience, and I cannot wait to play through it again. This time I will be able to experience the game fully, as I will download Oracle of Seasons as well. The two could be linked via a password, which would allow access to new items and bosses.
Both games will be available to download from the 3DS eShop on May 30th.

Level-5 Games
If you've played any of the Professor Layton or Inazuma Eleven games, you'll probably be familiar with Level-5. Of course, they are responsible for publishing other games, such as those that featured in the Guild collections. They brought three games from Japan's Guild01 collection to the EU 3DS eShop, two of which I downloaded and enjoyed very much; Liberation Maiden and Crimson Shroud.
There was a second set of games, Guild02. Three of them from that collection will be making their way onto the EU 3DS eShop: The Starship Damrey, Bugs vs. Tanks and Attack of the Friday Monsters: A Tokyo Tale.
The Starship Damrey puts you on an abadoned ship, with no information at all. You have to explore and gather information in order to discover what has happened.
Bugs vs. Tanks is exactly what it says on the tin. Created by Keiji Inafune, the man behind Mega Man, this game sees you taking control of a shrunken World War II era tank and fighting bugs. This one interests me the most.
Attack of the Friday Monsters: A Tokyo Tale follows the adventures of a boy who lives in a town where monsters from Japanese 1970s movies come to life every Friday. This game couldn't sound any more Japanese if it tried, in my opinion. I will be keeping an eye out for this and seeing how well it does in reviews before considering downloading it.

Shin Megami Tensei IV
The fourth game in the Shin Megai Tensei series (bet you would have never guessed that), and another top quality RPG for the 3DS. I've only recently experienced the world of Shin Megami Tensei with Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked, but from what I've played, I am looking forward to this.
A European release for Shin Megami Tensei IV has been confirmed, but no dates announced yet.

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy
Considering as this will be the sixth Professor Layton game, I am sure that many of you will be familiar with the professor and his sidekick Luke. It was inevitable that this would receive a European release, and that was confirmed in today's Nintendo Direct.
I haven't really played the series, but I'm certain this will be good news for Professor Layton fans.

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy
An amazing trailer was shown for this game, and I immediately decided I want it. Considering as Bravely Default is an RPG developed by Square Enix, there is a lot of hope for this one. Also, it has a similar art style to Final Fantasy IV on the DS. The trailer featured everything you would expect from a Square Enix RPG: magic, dragons, crystals, swords, mysterious characters...
There was some doubt about whether this would be released outside of Japan, but it has been confirmed that Europe will be receiving this brilliant looking game.

The Legend of Zelda 3DS
We were informed some time ago that there would be a new Legend of Zelda game for the 3DS. There was much speculation, with people guessing at a remake of either A Link to the Past or Majora's Mask.
What was revealed today was a new top-down Zelda game, set in the same world as a Link to the Past. You have no idea how hard it was for me to keep my composure when this was revealed...
Anyway, it seems that the dungeons will be towers, as the 3D effect allows the distinction between floors to be made so much easier. From what was shown, the sword and shield will be there as tradition dictates, and it seems that there will be a hammer item.
One of the new features is the ability to allow Link to turn into a drawing on the wall, offering a new perspective for dungeons. It also allows him to slip through barred windows and access new areas.
This new Zelda game will be released for the 3DS some time late this year.
I'm not sure I'll get this- hahahahahaha! Of course I'm going to pick it up! I mean, come on; a new Zelda game!

Ahem... right, in summary here are the results of today's Nintendo Direct:

I must own these, no matter what happens. Why must all their release dates be so far away?
The Legend of Zelda 3DS, Fire Emblem: Awakening (but you know that), Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, Shin Megami Tensei IV, The Legend of Zelda: Oracles, and EarthBound.

All the other games are ones I shall watch with interest.

With a presentation like this, I am looking forward to Nintendo's E3 presentation.

Touhou Character #3: Sakuya Izayoi

Continuing the introduction of Touhou characters, I will be taking a look at one who spent some time as a playable character. She is the Perfect and Elegant Maid, Sakuya Izayoi.
The Perfect and Elegant Maid, Sakuya Izayoi
Sakuya Izayoi was introduced as the fifth stage midboss and boss in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, the sixth Touhou game and first for Windows. She is the head maid of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and a loyal servant to Remilia Scarlet.
Sakuya is a human, although she possesses the ability to manipulate time and space. As far as I am aware, she has only ever officially used her powers to freeze time and increase the size of the interior of the Scarlet Devil Mansion.
Sakuya made several appearances in the games that followed Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. She was a selectable playable character until Phantasmagoria of Flower View for the main series of games. Aside from her appearance as a playable character in the official fighting games, Sakuya has yet to be playable again. The reason for this may be that the Scarlet Devil Mansion has had little involvement in the latest plots.
However, it seems that the fanbase adore her and the other residents of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. With the lazy gatekeeper, the perpetually-ill librarian, the charismatic vampire and her little sister as well as Sakuya, they make a great cast.
Who knows, maybe Sakuya will one day regain her role as a playable character in the main series of games...

Fire Emblem Week: Ike

Continuing Fire Emblem week, I will be taking a look at the main character of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Ike.
Ike, as he appeared in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Ike is a character that very much breaks one of Fire Emblem's traditions. Admittedly, he does possess blue hair, but he isn't of noble birth. Instead, he is the son of Greil, the leader of a troupe of mercenaries.
Ike's homeland is Crimea, on the continent of Tellius. In Tellius, alongside the beorc (humans), there are laguz. Laguz are able to shift into animal form.
There's a long history of what is effectively racism between the beorc and laguz, yet Ike just thinks of everyone as people. Due to this, he is well-liked by beorc and laguz alike.
Ike has a huge appetite, and is fond of meat and spicy foods.
Ike ends up fighting against Mad King Ashnard, under the hire of the princess of Crimea, Elincia. After the war is won, Ike goes back to being a mercenary.
Three years later, the events of Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn take place. The nobility of Crimea are displeased with Elincia's rule, and an uprising starts. Before things are allowed to get too out of hand, the Greil Mercenaries appear, led by Ike.
Ike is also playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, alongside Marth. During the Subspace Emissary mode, Ike teams up with Marth and Meta Knight to battle the subspace forces.

Fire Emblem Week: Order Shipped

Game have confirmed that my order of Fire Emblem: Awakening has been shipped! I am somewhat hyped for the game, as you may have guessed. I should also get hold of the artbook as well.

Just a short story I wrote a while ago

Considering what I detailed I planned to do in the first post of this blog, I think it is time I actually posted a story. The following is a piece I wrote when I attended university, shortly after developing the characters of Rin and Amity. Since then, I have changed the circumstances of their meeting, but this was pretty much where the whole idea for the Coin Flip Chronicles began.
Without further ado, I present to you A Meeting.

A Meeting

Dark clouds covered the sky, completely blotting out any light that may have been attempting to break through. Torrential rain poured forth, causing rivers to overflow and large puddles to form everywhere. Even the shelter provided by Maiso Forest did nothing to help with the downpour.

Rushing onward as fast as she could, Rin battled the elements in order to find her way to the next town. She felt as if she had spent several weeks within the forest, due to a lack of any notable landmarks. Just as she was cursing her luck, a bolt of lightning leapt from the clouds, followed by the monstrous roar of the thunder. Rin instantly stopped in her tracks, and crouched down with her eyes closed. With one arm wrapped around her katana, she covered her ears, and attempted to block the noise of the thunder. Rin's efforts to block out the sound were fruitless.

A while after the thunder had stopped, Rin dared to listen out for a moment. All she could hear was the sound of the rain. She decided to take the chance to find some kind of shelter to wait out the storm.
After a few minutes of searching, Rin suddenly spotted a tent set up nearby. She slowly approached the tent, trying to see if anyone was inside it or not. Another sudden rumble of thunder spurred her onwards quicker.

Upon discovering the tent was empty, Rin took the coin from the locket she wore, and flipped it. She checked the result, and then crawled into the empty tent. She wasn't able to see much in the poorly lit tent. Despite the poor light, Rin set her katana down beside her, took off her duster, and used it as a makeshift cover. She was wearing a white blouse and black skirt underneath. She wore black boots, and thigh-high socks. Her duster had helped with keeping those dry as well, although her boots had gathered quite large amounts of mud. Laying back, Rin stared upwards blankly, before her exhaustion finally caught up with her. Despite the noise from the storm, Rin managed to fall asleep without any problems.

'Ah, good morning,' a female voice said to Rin. Rin moved into a sitting position and rubbed her eyes. She yawned before replying to the other person.

'Morning,' Rin replied, stretching.

'You don't seem to be a morning person, huh?'

'I've been awake for longer than any normal human should be... I'm surprised I actually woke up, to be honest.'

'Hmm... I don't think you have actually woken up, yet.'

Suddenly, Rin's mind began to work properly again. She looked over to the source of the voice, to discover it was another girl around her age. This girl had blonde hair, and wore a white blouse and black skirt not too dissimilar from Rin's own clothes. She had a pink mob cap on her head, which had a red ribbon band around it. One particularly striking feature was the duster she was wearing. Glancing around the tent, Rin confirmed that her duster had been stolen.

'Who are you?' Rin asked, reaching over to her katana.

'My name is Amity,' the girl replied, 'actually I need a favour from you.'

'Amity, is it? You appear to have something of mine. Give it back.'

'Oh, this?' Amity said, motioning the duster, 'you can have it back when you've done this favour for me, all right?'

'Do you think it's wise to steal things from someone who has a katana?'

'Follow me!' Amity said, leaving the tent and disappearing into the forest.

Rin cursed under her breath, and then reached for her coin. Reassured that her locket had not been taken, Rin flipped her coin and examined the result.

'Tails, huh?' Rin muttered, 'sorry, Amity, but the coin has decided that you should be killed...' Rin picked up her katana and followed Amity into the depths of the forest.

Rin's lack of direction didn't help, but eventually she stumbled across Amity again. This fact was somewhat helped by Amity standing in a clearing and waving energetically. Rin was thrown off of her stride for a moment, but she quickly regained her composure and approached Amity with her katana drawn.

'So you've decided to help me out, then?' Amity asked, almost as if she was completely oblivious of Rin's katana.

'I flipped my coin, and it decided that I should kill you before I take back my duster,' Rin said. Without any more hesitation, Rin charged at Amity. Just as she was about to strike at Amity, Rin slipped on a patch of mud.

'Steady, there,' Amity said, catching Rin. Rin quickly struggled to her feet and attempted to regain her composure, but Amity interrupted her. 'So, I just done a favour for you, so you should do one for me in return.'

'I can't go against what the coin shows me,' Rin insisted.

'Look how well that turned out,' Amity replied, 'why don't you try flipping that coin of your again? I reckon it will want you to help me out.'

Rin decided to flip the coin again, although she couldn't hide her dissatisfaction at the result. Although she tried to hide the disappointment, Amity managed to pick up on it.

'Ah, glad you've decided to help me out,' Amity said, smiling at Rin. Without waiting for Rin to say anything, Amity walked off. Feeling obligated to her coin, Rin sighed and followed Amity.

'Over there,' Amity whispered, pointing at a fairly well-built man who was carrying a large sword. Rin and Amity had concealed themselves in some dense foliage whilst they spied on their target.

'What about him?' Rin asked.

'He took something precious to me,' Amity replied.

'Someone took something of mine recently, actually.'

'I had to make sure that I had something to guarantee your help.'

'Yeah, yeah. So, what is it that I'm going to get back for you?'

'It's a locket. Actually, it's remarkably similar to the one you have.'

'Should be easy, then. Give me a couple of moments, and you'll have your locket back.'

Amity watched as Rin stepped out in front of the man. She hadn't drawn her katana, although the man was extremely weary.

'Who are you?' the man asked.

'My name is Rin,' Rin introduced herself, 'now I believe it is common courtesy to tell me your name now.'

'I'm Ryu. What do you want from me?'

'You took something from someone I know. They've asked me to take it back. So, will you return it?'

'Oh, this?' Ryu said, producing Amity's locket. Rin was momently thrown off by the appearance of the locket; it was exactly the same as the one she wore. Ryu was also quick to notice it, as Rin had reached up to her own locket as an automatic response to seeing Amity's one.

'Hand it over, Ryu,' Rin demanded.

'Do you know that I have only ever seen two of these lockets? I reckon these will be worth a fair bit, so I'm gonna have to take that one from you as well.'

'I was hoping I could have just convinced you to give it back with words alone,' Rin said, unsheathing her katana and throwing the scabbard aside.

'You think you can beat me? I train practically every day! No one I know has ever beat me!' Ryu exclaimed, readying his sword. Rin and Ryu clashed. Rin was caught slightly off-guard by Ryu's speed, since his sword was so big. She managed to parry his blow, but it was evident that he had the upper hand in their fight. Amity watched worriedly, beginning to regret involving Rin.

Although it took a few moments longer than she expected, Rin sound found her rhythm, and managed to force Ryu to defend. Amity hadn't seen much in the way of swordplay before, but something about Rin's technique seemed to signal that she had been taught well, although she still had lots of room to improve.

'I'll be taking that locket, now,' Rin said, creating an opening in Ryu's defence. Without any hesitation, Rin smacked him with the flat of her blade, and punched him unconscious whilst he was reeling from the blow. Ryu fell to the ground like a sack of spuds, and Rin retrieved Amity's locket.

'Well done! You did it!' Amity exclaimed, emerging from her hiding spot. Just as she attempted to grab her locket, Rin removed it from her reach.

'I won't give you this until you return my duster.'

'Oh, fair enough, I suppose,' Amity agreed. Rin and Amity swapped the duster and the locket, both grateful to finally retrieve their beloved items. When Rin slipped her duster back on, it felt more comfortable than before. She couldn't quite fathom the reason for this, but she seemed to feel a bond forming with Amity.

'My name is Rin, by the way,' Rin said. Amity replied by hugging Rin and thanking her for retrieving the locket. Rin wasn't too sure how to react to this, but she knew that it felt incredibly nice.

'So, what are you doing roaming Maiso Forest, anyway?' Amity asked.

'I was going over to the next city, but I decided to wait out the storm.'

'Really? Why would you do that? You faced that man with no problems.'

'Actually, I hate to admit it, but I really hate loud noises...'

'Well, I suppose we all have our own wants and fears, huh? Well, at least you didn't get lost in the forest.' Amity was quick to notice Rin attempting to hide her embarrassment, and couldn't help but laugh.

'Oh, come on! Surely you have things that you aren't too proud of, as well?' Rin asked.

'Yeah, I suppose I do... I might even tell you about them.'

'Really?'

'Yeah, since I like you so much,' Amity said, smiling at Rin. Rin could feel herself blushing slightly, since no one she met had ever treated her like this before. Without any further hesitation, Amity decided to lead Rin out of the forest, only after they had stopped off at her tent.

Rin had expected to return to the tent she had slept in, but they completely bypassed it. Her curiosity growing, Rin asked Amity about the tent she had spent the night in.

'I think it belonged to that Ryu person,' Amity informed Rin, 'I was out picking herbs in this forest when he jumped me. He took my locket, but left a really obvious trail. I followed him and found that tent, and decided to set up camp nearby. I was planning on stealing my locket back from him during the night, but when I went into his tent, I found you instead.'

'That could've been dangerous if he was in the tent, you know. How much is that locket worth to you?'

'Ah, it actually belongs to my parents... I'm not exactly on the best terms with my parents, to be honest. Truth be told, this is one of the things I'm not too proud of.'

'Well, at least you have parents,' Rin said, 'I only have my looks and this katana to remember mine by.'

'I'm sorry to hear that.'

'Huh. Usually people tell me how unfortunate I am to have purple hair...'

'What's wrong with your hair? I think it makes you look wonderful... in fact, I might even go as far to say you are incredibly attractive.'

'Err... wow. No one has ever said anything that nice to me before... although isn't it weird for a girl to think that about another girl?'

'Surely someone with purple hair shouldn't really care about stuff like that?'

'Ha ha, I suppose you're right. Anyway, tell me about your parents.'

'Ah, well, my mother wouldn't be so bad if she wasn't so terrified of my father. She wouldn't even dare speak to another man, for fear of my father hurting both her and the people she talks to.'

'That sounds rough... I have to admit, I feel a little envy, just at the fact you have parents.'

'Trust me, after I tell you about my father, you won't be envious any longer. I can tell that my father was always disappointed at the fact that I was born female. He never allowed me to experience anything a girl should, and always forced me to pretend to be a boy. I could never grow my hair out, or wear dresses or skirts, and he always forced me to do the work that was expected of the boys. It's like he expected to me to become a boy just by doing everything a boy would. I don't think anyone in my village actually knew I was a girl until the day I decided to flee.'

'Not to sound rude or anything,' Rin said, feeling a little awkward, 'but err... well, even if your hair was short at this moment, I would definitely see that you're female.'

'Oh, my chest? Yeah, my father always forced me to wear thick clothing to hide that... you have no idea how much I had to put up with those hate-filled eyes every time I saw him.'

'You were wrong, Amity. I still feel a little envious that you have parents, even if they treated you that badly.'

'Well, that's up to you, I guess. All right, once I've packed everything away, we'll leave this forest and go to the nearest city. I hear there's quite a big mercenary guild there.'

'Oh, so what do you think Ryu was doing out of his tent during that thunderstorm?' Rin asked.

'Hmm... I think he was with a group of bandits. He must have got separated, and it's likely his sense of direction is as bad as yours.'

'Oh, thanks...' With that, Rin helped Amity to pack her things.

After around fifteen minutes of travelling after packing up Amity's camp, the pair heard someone disturbing the nearby foliage. They decided to stop and see who was approaching. Emerging from the forest, Ryu appeared before the girls.

'Found you!'

'Oh, Ryu, huh?' Rin said, preparing herself to fight.

'I need to pay you back for humiliating me in that fight!'

'Surely you'd realise that I will probably be able to beat you again? So why come after us?'

'I remember the boss saying that pretty-looking lasses fetch a fair bit of gold... and I reckon I would get even more for you, since your hair is purple, like in that story... er..'

'So, you think you'd be able to sell us?'

'Yeah, and I'm going to fight seriously this time! I never expected a girl to be able to fight, but I've learnt from my past mistake!'

'Ryu, could you please stop exclaiming every sentence?' Rin asked, mockingly, 'we're standing right in front of you, and it's probably not very wise to let the whole world know your plan.'

'Shut up! I'm going to beat you this time!'

'So noisy...' Rin muttered. She sighed and unsheathed her katana. Amity hadn't noticed it earlier, but Rin's katana seemed to give off a sinister aura. She had no doubt that if anyone other than Rin wielded it, they would be driven insane. Amity couldn't be too sure, but something about Rin's presence, which felt incredibly warm and kind, seemed to hold the katana's aura in check.

Without any further hesitation, Rin and Ryu locked blades. The sudden movement surprised Amity, and she could see that Ryu was giving the fight everything he had. It was evident that when Ryu fought seriously, he was incredibly skilled. Somehow, Rin managed to match Ryu in skill, and neither side was giving an inch. Amity watched in awed silence as the two swords crashed into each other, over and over.

'So, you actually can fight,' Rin said whilst the two blades were locked.

'I'm surprised you can keep up,' Ryu replied, 'of course, it's just a matter of outlasting you. You will tire before I do, and that's when this fight will end.'

'You sound cocky.'

'Just confident.'

'Ah, I guess I'll end this now, then.'

'Now who's cocky?'

'It's confidence. Now, let me show you a little trick I learnt,' Rin said. When the two blades clashed again, Rin managed to summon enough strength to knock Ryu's sword from his hands. Without any hesitation, Rin run him through. Withdrawing her blade, Rin flicked the blood off of it.

'Rin...' Amity said, a fear filling her.

'I hate having to kill...' Rin muttered, retrieving her scabbard and sheathing her katana. Although Amity could feel fear, she still felt Rin's warm and gentle presence, which put her mind at ease.

'I suppose we should bury him,' Rin said. Amity agreed, and the pair managed to dig a pit in the ground, despite their limited resources. Rin pushed Ryu's corpse into the pit, and she and Amity went to work burying him.

'That was probably a little undignified,' Amity said, when they had finished.

'He wanted to sell us as slaves, and he was fighting to kill me.'

'Well, I don't suppose it matters now.'

'Anyway, now we're free from people trying to sell us, I believe you were going to lead me to the city.'

'Ah, yes. Just follow me.' Amity led the way forward. 'Actually, why do you want to go to the city?'

'Ah, I know next to nothing about my family. I mean, I know who my parents were, but I never learnt anything about any of my relatives beyond that. It might just be that I have the blood of two legendary figures in my veins, and I was hoping to find out more about that.'

'Might? Surely your hair is a definite sign of that? Actually, I was hoping I might stay with you from now on.'
'You know what? Usually I would flip my coin to decide something like that... but this time, I'm going to make my own choice. You can accompany me, Amity. I have no problem with that.'

'Thanks, Rin. You're actually the first friend I've made since I ran away from home.'

'Friend, huh? I reckon we'll become more than that, Amity.' Rin couldn't help but smile when she saw Amity blush at her statement.

With a friend at her side, and no doubt that her fate was a special one, Rin felt incredibly good as the pair left the forest and made their way to Kodai City.

Touhou Character #2: Marisa Kirisame

The next character I will be introducing from the Touhou series is the second protagonist. More often than not, when Reimu is there, you will find the Ordinary Magician, Marisa Kirisame, not far behind.
The Ordinary Magician, Marisa Kirisame
Marisa Kirisame is a human, just like Reimu. However, she is skilled in the art of magic, and several youkai have commented how she is more youkai-like in nature than human. With her Mini-Hakkero, she is able to cast her trademark spell: Love Sign: Master Spark. The instructions for doing so are simple;
  1. Concentrate your mind
  2. Mutter your spell to the Mini-Hakkero tenderly
  3. Aim at someone you don't like...
  4. Now unleash your annihilation of love!
As well as being good at magic, Marisa is quite the thief as well. If she shows up somewhere, the reason is probably to take everything that isn't nailed down. She has 'borrowed' many books from the library of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, which she swears to return once she's dead.
Marisa's title of Ordinary Magician is well founded. Aside from the magic, she is naught more than an normal human. Despite this, she can keep up with Reimu when it comes to fighting the various beings that make their home in Gensokyo.

Fire Emblem Week: Eirika

Continuing the Fire Emblem week, I will be taking a look at one of the main characters from Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. She is the princess of Renais, Eirika.
Eirika
At the beginning of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, Eirika's home of Renais is invaded by Grado. As Grado had been an ally of Renais before the attack, they were caught unawares. Eirika's brother, Ephraim disappears to fight Grado, whilst Eirika escapes with the general of the Renais Knights, Seth.
After escaping to Frelia, Eirika decides to join up with Ephraim, and she sets out with a couple of new allies.
Eirika has no love for violence, yet she insisted on having Ephraim teach her how to fight. Eirika is very much a kindhearted individual, and will stop to help those in need. If it is necessary, she will fight.

New Nintendo Direct - Wednesday 17 April

Well, it seems I have just discovered that Nintendo will be streaming a new Nintendo Direct this Wednesday. It will be focusing on the 3DS, and I am very much looking forward to what they have to announce for us.
I reckon we can expect more news on Pokémon X and Y, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Mario and Luigi: Dream Team, Mario Golf and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D.
To be honest, those titles have been previously announced in Nintendo Direct, so I would prefer to hear some news on new titles. Maybe, if we're really lucky, the fourth Golden Sun game will be announced. However, as Camelot are working on Mario Golf, I don't think we will have that news... yet.
The presentation will be aired at 3PM UK time on Wednesday 17th April, and I will definitely be tuning in. I will post my reaction to the announcements on here.

Coin Flip Chronicles Characters #2: Amity

Ah, another quick sketch
Amity is the second protagonist of the Coin Flip Chronicles series. She meets Rin in her hometown, and after the two experience their first adventure together, she decides to travel with Rin.
Amity is particularly skilled at first aid. Unfortunately, this is a skill she is unable to practice when she's at home, since her abusive father insists that she carries out a man's work.
It isn't until she travels with Rin that Amity is able to improve upon her medical skills. As Rin tends to get into a lot of fights, Amity often finds her hands full.
Rin's way of making decisions is something that Amity is completely against. She believes choices should be made after considering the consequences of each, but Rin doesn't listen. Regardless, Amity finds herself going along with Rin anyway.
Amity is very much a kindhearted person, and she develops a relationship with Rin that goes beyond that of friendship.

Touhou Character #1: Reimu Hakurei

As I have mentioned previously, I will be going over the characters from Touhou. First up is the Shrine Maiden of Paradise, Reimu Hakurei.
The Shrine Maiden of Paradise, Reimu Hakurei
Reimu could be considered one of the main protagonists of the series, alongside Marisa Kirisame. She has appeared in almost every piece of official Touhou media, often as a playable character. She has no appearance in Shoot the Bullet or Fairy Wars, and she is not a playable character in Double Spoiler.
Reimu is the go-to girl for incident solving. Whenever something odd starts happening in Gensokyo, Reimu will follow her intuition to whoever has caused the incident.
She is the shrine maiden of the Hakurei Shrine. Although she would like to have human visitors to the shrine, they are deterred by the youkai that often visit. Most of the enemies Reimu has previously defeated become friendly with Reimu.
Reimu is a human, with the power of flight. Despite this, she has gone up against vampires, ghosts, oni, immortals, so on and so forth.
The reason Reimu can go up against such powerful beings is due to the spell card rules. Another factor may be that if Reimu was truly defeated, Gensokyo's border would collapse. However, I can't actually say for certain if that is true or not, but it is a theory I've seen go around.

Fire Emblem Week: Eliwood

You may notice that I'm posting stuff in rapid succession; well, I have a lot to say. Anyway, in the week that Fire Emblem: Awakening is finally released in the UK, I intend to take a look back at the other Fire Emblem games that have been available in the UK and their characters. First up on that list is Eliwood, the main character in the first Fire Emblem game for the GBA, imaginatively titled Fire Emblem.
Eliwood
Eliwood first appears in Lyn's story, rescuing a dancer named Ninian from some bandits, and then convincing Caelin's neighbours to not involve themselves in Lyn's battle.
A year after that, Eliwood sets out on a quest to find his missing father, Lord Elbert. He is joined by his best friend Hector, and eventually reunites with Lyn. Their quest takes them up against an organisation known as Black Fang.
Eliwood is the father of Roy, who's only appearance outside of Japan so far has been Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Eliwood has no love for war. He states that if he focuses on the enemy before him, he's fine, but picturing innocent families caught up in it... Despite that, he will fight for what he believes is right.
Something I haven't mentioned previously is support conversations. If you raise two characters support level to A, they gain an ending together. Lyn, Ninian and a pegasus knight by the name of Fiora all have the possibility of ending up as Eliwood's betrothed, and mother of Roy.

Fire Emblem Week: My First Fire Emblem Experience

In the week that Fire Emblem: Awakening is set to be finally released in the UK, a full year after originally coming out in Japan, I figure I would blog about Fire Emblem. After all, it is one of my favourite Nintendo series, sitting up there right alongside Mario, Zelda, Kirby, and Metroid.
I first discovered Fire Emblem completely by chance. I had recently got a platinum Game Boy Advance, and the wonderful Golden Sun to go with it. Still, I craved more games, and I was browsing my local Game store. I can't remember for certain why the box caught my eye; maybe it was the red-haired character on the box, maybe it was the fact that I have always loved swords and sorcery. Still, I picked it up and asked my mum if I could have it.
I took Fire Emblem home with me that day, and joined the adventures of Lyn as she fought to prevent her uncle Lundgren from usurping the Caelin throne. Instantly I was hooked on the Fire Emblem series.
One thing Fire Emblem does really well is characterisation. The units you command aren't just nameless soldiers. They all have names and personalities; Florina the pegasus knight who fears men, Sain the womaniser, each character was unique in their own way.
Which made it painful to see them cut down by an enemy. Once they were defeated, they were dead. Gone forever (or only seriously wounded if they had some importance to the plot, with the exception of the three Lords. That would net you a game over.) Intelligent Systems are definitely one of my favourite developers, but they are so cruel. They will make you get attached to the characters, and then one careless mistake on your part can result in that character being gone forever.
Anyway, back to the red-haired hero I mentioned. He appears in Lyn's story to rescue a dancer named Ninian and convince the other nations to stay out of Caelin's dispute. It isn't until a year after Lyn's story that Eliwood becomes the main character, embarking on a quest to find his missing father.
The stories in the Fire Emblem games are pure class. I won't go into too much detail to avoid spoiling the games for those who haven't played them (shame on you!), but they are definitely worth experiencing. I'll just say that there was more than enough swords and sorcery.
Fire Emblem will always have a fond place in my heart, and I reckon I'll be celebrating Fire Emblem: Awakening's release this week and beyond. I have a copy preordered from Game, which means I should also receive the limited edition artbook. I really am a sucker when it comes to those kinds of things.

Coin Flip Chronicles Characters #1: Rin

Just a quick sketch... wow, I think I need to clean my scanner
Rin is the main character of the Coin Flip Chronicles series. She has purple hair, which meant that she was considered an outcast when she was younger. She was only able to cope thanks to her parents, but they were cruelly taken from her when she was still a child.
She inherited her purple hair from her mother, and her father was able to pass down his katana before being taken from the world. Both these things connect Rin to legends; the purple hair connects her to the legendary Witch Queen, and the katana is said to have been the very same one from the legend of the Demon Slayer.
Another strange feature Rin has is complete heterochromia iridis, or mismatched eyes. One of her eyes is a natural green colour, but the other is purple. This is another sign that Rin has some kind of power hidden within her.
Rin overcomes many hardships during her childhood, and goes on to become a fearsome warrior. However, she can't be entirely sure whether it is her own skill or the katana augmenting her swordplay. The katana never seems to grow dull, and Rin doesn't have to tend to it on a regular basis. Rin has never seen anyone else with a katana. You may notice that she carries it on her back; this stems from when she was younger. It was far too long for her to carry at her side, and she just grew up used to having it at her back.
Rin's favourite item of clothing is her duster. She wears it everywhere she goes, no matter how warm it becomes. She always wears it undone, and loves feeling it flapping in the breeze.
During her travels, Rin meets Amity. The two form a strong relationship, mainly because Rin had rarely every experienced such warmth from anyone outside of her family.
Finally, Rin is the reason that the series is called 'Coin Flip'. Whenever she has to make a decision, no matter how important, she will flip the coin. She keeps the coin inside her locket. The coin has a dragon embossed on side, and the Witch Queen's likeness on the other. Coincidentally, the Witch Queen bears more than a passing resemblance to Rin.

Introduction to Coin Flip Chronicles

Here's the main point of starting this blog. Coin Flip Chronicles is a series of novels I intend to write. I have about one fully completed, and a couple of others underway. This will be an introduction to the world within Coin Flip Chronicles.
Coin Flip Chronicles will be a series of fantasy novels, following the adventures of a young woman named Rin. She travels with her closest friend, Amity, in order to find out more about her heritage. Naturally, they will encounter the various things you would expect from a fantasy novel: fantastical creatures, strange powers and plenty of sword fights.
Rin and Amity were characters I came up with a couple of years ago, and during that I have developed their characters and relationship during that time.
As this is a simple introduction, I will be posting about the other characters separately, whilst trying not to give too much away about the plots of the things I have written.

An Introduction to Touhou, for Those Who Are Unfortunate Enough to Know Nothing About It

Arguably, one could say that Touhou is an obscure series of Japanese bullet hell games created by a possibly perpetually drunk Japanese man known as ZUN. One could also say that using the word Japanese twice in the same sentence is redundant, but I digress. ZUN is solely responsible for the main games.
Anyway, the reason that the obscurity can be argued is that the fanbase is absolutely huge. To steal a quote from the TV Tropes' Touhou Crowning Music of Awesome page (click it, I dare you), most of the songs from the Touhou games have anywhere between sixty and two hundred covers.
There is a torrent that features 1.2TB worth of Touhou songs.
Then there's all the fanart, animations, music videos, toys, so on, so forth. Consider it rule 9 of the internet: if it exists, Touhou has done a cross over with it.
See?
There's thousands of pieces of fanart. Now whereas ZUN is able to create the games on his own, and compose loads of wonderful music, there is one area that he doesn't really excel in. His art isn't exactly the greatest. Fortunately, this has allowed artists from all walks of life to interpret Touhou in their own style. I would post some of the fanart up here, but there would be far too much good stuff to post. Go search for it on your own, and keep safesearch on... unless you want to find the more questionable pictures, whatever.
Currently, there are thirteen games in the main series. Following is a list of the games, including the official spin offs:
  • Touhou 01: Highly Responsive to Prayers
  • Touhou 02: Story of Eastern Wonderland
  • Touhou 03: Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream
  • Touhou 04: Lotus Land Story
  • Touhou 05: Mystic Square
Those five games were released for the PC-98, a Japanese computer from what I can tell. The next ones were developed for Windows, which I am sure you are familiar with.
  • Touhou 06: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil
  • Touhou 07: Perfect Cherry Blossom
  • Touhou 07.5: Immaterial and Missing Power
  • Touhou 08: Imperishable Night
  • Touhou 09: Phantasmagoria of Flower View
  • Touhou 09.5: Shoot the Bullet
  • Touhou 10: Mountain Faith
  • Touhou 10.5: Scarlet Weather Rhapsody
  • Touhou 11: Subterranean Animism
  • Touhou 12: Undefined Fantastic Object
  • Touhou 12.3: Touhou Hisoutensoku
  • Touhou 12.5: Double Spoiler
  • Touhou 12.8: Fairy Wars
  • Touhou 13: Ten Desires
  • Touhou 13.5: Hopeless Masquerade
Immaterial and Missing Power, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody and Hopeless Masquerade are fighting games. Touhou Hisoutensoku is basically an expansion pack for Scarlet Weather Rhapsody.
Currently, Hopeless Masquerade has only been available as a demo, with the full game being released some time this year.
Shoot the Bullet and Double Spoiler combine bullet hell with photography, and Fairy Wars has you freezing bullets.

There are books and manga, with the story written by ZUN and artwork done by people who can actually draw.

There are loads and loads of characters, hence the large volumes of fanart. Since I've rambled on for a fair bit, I will be introducing characters in no particular order in other posts.

First Post (There's an original title)

Welcome to my blog, in which I will try to post various snippets of the various novels and short stories I have written and will write in the future.
I will also talk about games, anime, manga and whatever I please.
The main focus will be on my writing, but I can see my love of the aforementioned things taking over that.
My next post will introduce one of my characters, and if I can figure this out or come up with something decent, I may even include some of my own hand-drawings.
Also expect plenty of Touhou goodness. If you don't know what that is, don't worry. I'll do an introduction on it in the near future.
Thanks for reading, I guess.
