A Tactician's Journal 10 - Mountains and Wyverns

Whilst there's a lull in new anime releases, I figure I'll continue with this Fire Emblem thing. So, yeah, last time the Shepherds prevented a night-time assassination, but now they have to escort the would-be victim to a safer place. Oh, and there will be spoilers aplenty, although I haven't really mentioned that much since the first post. Still, nothing major in this chapter, but you know, just a heads up.

Chapter 7: Incursion
Whilst escorting Emmeryn, we had to travel over the ominously named Breakneck Pass. Naturally, this got Lissa complaining, whilst Chrom reassured her it wasn't so bad. The usual stuff, although Lissa did have a point. I have no idea how, but it seemed that Chrom was immune to feeling the aches and pains of us normal folk.
We were accompanied on our travels by an old man with the title of Hierarch, or something. I don't know, he just seemed to appear out of nowhere to join us on our journey. Anyway, Frederick had noticed that he kept glancing up at the peaks. Supposedly he had been a friend of House Ylisse for many years, and was responsible for guiding Emmeryn during the early years of her rule. Naturally, I had some suspicions about him, but I couldn't quite put my finger on what.

And then we were attacked by Plegian soldiers. This has become a regular occurrence when being anywhere near Chrom... Still, I got ready for battle alongside everyone else.
We soon found out how the Plegians had discovered our position: the hierarch had betrayed Chrom, although he didn't survive long after trying to get protection with the Plegians. Naturally, the Plegians were after the Fire Emblem. Whilst we fought, Phila retreated to the back with Emmeryn, as per Chrom's orders.
The enemy forces contained a fair few wyvern riders, which had the advantage on the rugged terrain. Whilst they closed in on us, we had to deal with barbarians, thieves and archers. When the wyvern riders drew close, Virion and Miriel were able to take them out with their bow and magic respectively, whilst us others concentrated on the ground-bound soldiers. Also, Chrom's Falchion was effective at killing wyverns, so we had that on our side as well.
During the battle, we were joined by another new ally. A young pegasus knight named Cordelia, who Phila assured was quite gifted. She come bearing news of enemy reinforcements to the rear. Seeing her there was not good news, as she had been stationed at the border...
Still, having another flying unit join us was a boon on the uneven terrain, and new allies for the Shepherds were always welcome.
The enemy leader was a wyvern rider by the name of Vasto. The way he had the hierarch killed at the beginning of the battle showed he was a sadistic man, so there would be sympathy from me once he was defeated. However, before that could come, we would have to deal with the reinforcements that Cordelia had mentioned. They were a few wyvern riders, but we had become used to fighting them on the terrain.
We were able to take down the remaining wyvern riders, including Vasto, and secure yet another victory for the Shepherds.
With the enemy gone, Cordelia begged us to run, as more Plegians were in pursuit of us. Apparently Gangrel himself led his might against Cordelia's unit; she was the only pegasus knight to survive. Despite Cordelia's misgivings, she carried out her duty. Phila tried to reassure her. Chrom wasn't too happy with the news, and Emmeryn insisted on returning to the capital.
Emmeryn entrusted the Fire Emblem to Chrom so he could take it to safety whilst Emmeryn returned to the capital. Despite Chrom and Lissa's protests, Emmeryn remained determined to return home so she could be with her people.
Emmeryn didn't allow Chrom and Lissa to return with her, but she accepted Phila's offer to have the pegasus knights escort her back to Ylisstol. I guess that was done to put her siblings' minds at ease. Frederick promised to keep Chrom and Lissa safe, as ever. Phila also commanded Cordelia to stay with Chrom, thus giving us another permanent ally.
Chrom attempted to persuade Emmeryn to not go, but his attempts were unsuccessful. Emmeryn departed with Phila, leaving us Shepherds to travel to Ferox to gain the much-needed reinforcements.

So our plan to move Emmeryn somewhere safer was a complete and utter failure. She returned to Ylisstol, and now Chrom and Lissa have become depressed. I'm not sure if there's anything I can do to cheer them up. Still, we're returning to Ferox for reinforcements, and I plan on returning to Ylisstol before anything tragic can befall her.
